Commissioned Essays
To celebrate the launch of the Irish Photo Network three essays have been commissioned surrounding the featured artists exhibited on the website. Each essay follows a different theme, considering the conceptual background of each project.
Intimacy
- Dorothy Hunter
The work under the category Intimacy considers, for example, beyond desire, the human need for touching, generational continuity, youth culture and comradeship. Often these are tempered by the fear of loss and abandonment.
Conflicting Spaces
- Rebecca O’Dwyer
Here, in Conflicting Spaces, artists consider a wealth of contradictory or contiguous elements – physical, ideological or metaphysical. The works thus produce dialogical explorations and readings of their content.
Materialising the Abstract
- Kandace Siobhan Walker
Again, there is an element of conflict in the work included in Materialising the Abstract, producing opportunities for critical readings of the photographic work included. These include physicality and identity, intuition and language, oppression and resistance, the prosaic and the poetic.
